Shifting From One Web Hosting Provider to Another

Shifting of a web site from one host to another sounds very difficult, but in actual terms it is a very simple process.

The very crucial point one should keep in mind is that he should cancel his existing account till the ending of the whole process. No matters that user is unhappy with his account, still he should move with the account till his new account is up and is running smoothly. If one ends up his old account before getting sure about the working of his new account, then he can get into serious troubles, in case his new account does not work properly.

Following are the eight simple steps one should follow, so as to make sure that his site moves easily without experiencing any downtime.

Step1. Creating a new account:

As soon as the user chooses his new web host, he should sign up with that chosen package and create a new account. Now the user is ha

ving two accounts one with his current host and other with the new host.

Step 2. User should download his files from his old account:

The next step to be taken by the user is to go back to his old web host provider and download all his files. User can do it simply by connecting to the web host's ftp. He should not forget that even after he had downloaded all of his files he must keep his account active.

Step 3. Uploading the files to the new account:

As soon as the files of the user have been downloaded he should go to his new web host and upload his files through the new hosts ftp.

Step 4. Creating email accounts:

If one does not want to loose any of his email before changing his name servers, it is essential that he should create all the same email accounts he had at his old hosting account, in his new hosting account. When this happens, user will have the identical information in both of his new and old accounts.

Step 5. Checking of files and links:

If the user wants to make sure that all of his files have been updated properly without facing any kind of hurdle, as well as all the links within his website are functional, then he needs to check his website using the temporary URL addresses provided by his new host.

Step 6. Change the DNS:

User's new host should provide DNS. In case they have not provided DNS, then user should contact them and ask for that.

The question for whom to contact depends on with whom one has registered. If one's domain was registered through a domain registrar, then the user should contact them and in case one has registered the domain at his old web host, then he should contact them. The user should simply ask them to change his domain names servers (DNS) to the new DNS given by his new web host.

Step 7. User should wait for DNS to get it circulate:

When the modifications have been made to one's domain name servers (DNS) it will take 24-48 hours for his domain to propagate. During this period his website is visualized from the old web host, only once the propagation is completed his site will be viewed from his new web host.

Step 8. Cancellation of old Account:

User should not cancel his old account before 48 hours. He should make sure that his domain has resolved to his new hosting provider, after getting this surety he can cancel his account with his old web host.

Conclusion

If the user follows these simple steps, he can successfully shift his website from his old host to his new host without any downtime.
