When I first started doing keyword research for building niche keyword lists, I turned to Overture. With Overture, I could freely type in a keyword and it would generate a list of up to 100 keywords that contained the one I typed in. The problem occured when I wanted to build a list of thousands.

After reading dozens of internet marketing books, I realized that the fee-based Wordtracker was the most reliable and popular one. I've used it many times and thought it was the best keyword research tool. I could type in a primary keyword, and then a bunch of related keywords could be displayed. I could then dig deeper into each keyword to build a larger list of keywords. After using Overture and Wordtracker for some time, there were still some features left to be desired:

PageRank (PR) is Google's way of measuring the quality andrelative "importance" of your website to searchers. It's purposeis to give web surfers an idea of the importance of a website.

PageRank is measured on a scale of 0 to 10. Your PageRankdepends on the amount of web pages that link to yours, and thePR's of each of those pages.

It can take up to three months for a new website to be assigneda PageRank - depending on when Google decides to do the GoogleUpdate, where all websites' PR's are reviewed.

A thousand links from pages with low PageRanks can eventuallyachieve as high a PR as that from a few web pages with highPR's. Some website owners research the value of a potential linkpartner's PR before deciding whether or not to link with them.

It's true that a web page with a high PageRank can pass on ahigh PR to you, but this can be offset if the page has too manylinks on it, because the PR is distributed proportionally to allthe web pages it links to.

The website may be very new and you will have to wait for theGoogle Update before the value of linking with that website canbe determined.

Never link with a website merely because they have a high PR -consider the content of the website and it's relevance to yourtarget market as well.

Misconceptions Addressed: A High PageRank does not mean you willrank at the top of Google's results pages; it merely means thatyour website is well established on the Internet and if it islisted in the Google Directory, www.directory.google.com, itwill be listed above similar websites with a lower PageRank.

It is debateable, but the only true benefits of a high PageRankis that visitors that come across your site and see on theGoogle Toolbar that you have a high rank may perceive you as amore professional business and that you are more likely toreceive more hits from the google directory.
